Hosts Puerto Rico among 16 participants for FIBA 3x3 World Cup Qualifier 2019

14 Dec 2018

SAN JUAN (FIBA 3x3 World Cup Qualifier 2019) - The 16 participating teams (8 men, 8 women) will be in line to earn the last 6 tickets for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup when they meet in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 4-5, 2019.

Just one day after announcing the teams that have automatically qualified for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Amsterdam, Netherlands based on ranking (and hosts and defending champions), FIBA confirmed the list of participants for the first-ever FIBA 3x3 World Cup Qualifier.

The participants are the hosts and the top 7 teams in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking (on November 1, 2018), which are not yet qualified for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup. If a zone had a Zone Cup and the Zone Cup winners were not yet qualified for the World Cup, they automatically made it to the World Cup Qualifier and fewer teams qualified based on the ranking.

This is how Australia’s men and New Zealand’s women (FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2018 winners) and Mali’s women and Nigeria’s men (FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup 2018 winners) earned their ticket to Puerto Rico.

The 2-day event will also feature former World Cup medalists Australia’s women (bronze in 2012) and France’s men (bronze in 2017).

List of participants:
Men:  Australia,  Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Romania.
Women: Australia, Brazil, Estonia, Mali, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uganda.

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup Qualifier 2019 is the first event on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The top 3 teams (in each gender) in Puerto Rico will get a ticket to the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2019, where the 3 medalists qualify for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
