Wilson Sporting Goods and FIBA extend 3x3 basketball partnership through 2028

23 Apr 2019

MIES (SWITZERLAND) / CHICAGO (USA)  – Wilson Sporting Goods Co., and FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, announced today that they have extended their partnership for 3x3 basketball through 2028. Under the agreement, Wilson will provide the Official Game Ball for all FIBA 3x3 Official Competitions. The contract extends over the period of three Olympic Games. Wilson and FIBA entered into a strategic partnership for 3x3 in 2015.

“The Wilson Official FIBA 3x3 Game Ball has been an integral part of the tremendous growth of 3x3 basketball on the international stage and we are proud to continue our partnership in view of 3x3 entering the Summer Olympics as an official discipline for the first time in 2020 and beyond,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

“3x3 is the largest urban sport in the world and growing at fast rate,” said Mike Dowse, President, Wilson. “This game is exciting to play and fun to watch, and we are thrilled to be at the center of the action for many more years to come. FIBA is a tremendous partner and we look forward to working with players and teams globally to look for more ways we can enhance their play through our products and services.”

3x3 basketball, the largest urban team sport in the world, has gone from FIBA’s first official event all the way to the Olympics in just 10 years. FIBA 3x3 has a multi-million community of followers on social media and an even bigger one playing on indoor and outdoor courts in iconic locations all over the world.

The Wilson Official FIBA 3x3 Game Ball, a collaboration between the Wilson LABS, the innovation hub at Wilson, and FIBA 3x3, reflects the speed of 3x3 and enhances shooting, ball handling and grip for players of any size or skill level.

The Wilson Official FIBA 3x3 Game Ball offers improved handling for competitive players, which include men and women, teens and adults. The ball is suited to the quick pace and fast scoring action of the sport, and the heavier weight helps with shooting, especially in windy conditions outdoors.

The Wilson Official FIBA 3x3 Game Ball also features patented Wave Triple Threat Technology for superior control. This patented technology places 24 additional channels, or grooves, on the ball which gives player more grip points to better control the ball, regardless of the type of court or court conditions. Additionally, the ball showcases a vibrant FIBA 3x3 graphic design in bold blue and yellow to reflect the sun and sky -- the outdoor conditions in which 3x3 is traditionally played.  The partnership will offer a special edition ball designed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the coming months.

ABOUT FIBA 3x3

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups. On June 9, 2017, 3x3 was added to the Olympic Program, starting from the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Nike is FIBA 3x3's Founding Partner and Tissot FIBA 3x3's Official Timekeeper.

FIBA 3x3 events are played on Enlio courts with Schelde backstops, protected by MagicSky's tents and benefit from Wilson's innovative and specially-made ball for 3x3.
