FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup 2022 to take place in Bucharest, Romania

BUCHAREST (Romania) - The third edition of the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup will be staged in the Romanian capital on October 5-9, 2022.

Romania has been a hotbed for the growth of 3x3 and organized the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup three different times (2014, 2016 and 2018). The FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup will be held inside the Bucharest Metropolitan Circus, the iconic venue of the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2018.

“Romania has been such a pioneer and an amazing host to FIBA 3x3 official competitions,” FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said. “that FIBA is delighted to bring a 3x3 World Cup for the first time in the country. Seven of our Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalists competed in the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup. In other words, the people of Bucharest and the fans worldwide will get a glimpse of 3x3’s bright future.”

“It is an honor to be trusted by FIBA to organize the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup 2022 in Romania,” Romanian Basketball Federation President Carmen Tocala said. “3x3 has been in our DNA since the very first day. Qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics gave even more meaning to our continuous investment in the discipline. It was also a drive to continue organizing world class events in collaboration with our partner Sport Arena and bring both our teams to the Paris Olympics.”

Romania finished 7th with the women at the Tokyo Olympics. They won gold with the men in the first edition of the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2014 and silver with the women in 2016.

The FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup is a yearly competition. Japan’s women and Russia’s men are the defending champions. Bucharest will host the third edition in 2022. Lublin, Poland were recently announced as the hosts of the fourth edition, in 2023.

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups.

On July 24, 2021, 3x3 made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games.
